Maskela’s Carol Chen on Chasing Her Dreams, Career Highlights & Skincare
Carol Chen, of Covetella and Maskela, is a powerhouse entrepreneur. Growing up in the United States, the fashion entrepreneur has built several successful businesses across 4 countries, with Maskela growing to become a global brand. The snazzy face masks have been seen on A-list celebrities like Lady Gaga and Sarah Jessica Parker.
We caught up with Carol as she talks about her career journey, her go-to outfit during the pandemic and her simple but effective skincare routine. More, ahead.
What keeps you busy every day?
Chasing my dreams. I started two new brands during the pandemic — Maskela, a luxury face mask brand, and Carol Chen, my own eponymous designer brand, so I’ve been working nonstop.
Tell us more about your career journey. Are there any highlights so far?
I’ve built 5 different fashion companies across 4 different countries, all of which have had their own highlights.
My first label was sold in over 300 stores in the US, my second company hit 7-figures within the first year and my third brand was worn by top championship fighters. My fourth business, Covetella, dressed the stars in Crazy Rich Asians and my fifth brand, Maskela, has been worn by Lady Gaga and Sarah Jessica Parker. My own eponymous label won the Singapore Fashion Award last year and will be officially launching at Paris Fashion Week later this year.
What’s the first thing you do each morning?
Check my phone for any urgent messages. I’m always working with various time zones, so I sleep late and wake up late. I like to make sure to respond to anything pressing before I start my day.
What’s your go-to look for the day ahead? Do you plan your outfits ahead or pick randomly?
Unless I’m going out, I’m very much a minimalist and it’s gotten worse because of the pandemic. I basically have a “uniform” of solid tops and comfortable leggings while working from home. They say you can only make so many decisions in a day, so I try to avoid making excessive ones.
You’re constantly exposed to the newest collections and trends. Does that influence your way of dressing in any way?
Not really. I’ve always had an eye for style but I’ve never been trendy. I much rather shop what’s on sale than what’s trending, unless I really love it. Usually, I’ll choose timeless, classic pieces or unique, statement looks.
What is your skincare routine like? Talk us through your favourite beauty products.
Generally, I try to keep it simple while using high-quality products. I use a lot of Skin Inc products because I love how you can customise the products for your skin type. I’ll use their cleanser, followed by a serum and moisturiser. I’ll also use a sheet mask and go over my face with their Optimizer Voyage Trilight device.
How does your mood affect the way you wear (or don’t wear) makeup?
I very rarely wear makeup during the week to save time, but I always do when I’m trying to make a good impression and be my best self. I try not to rely on makeup too much, but it can definitely be a confidence booster.
How has your perception of beauty changed through the years?
It was “more was more” before, but now it’s definitely “less is more”. As people learn to embrace themselves and others more in their natural state, I feel the concept of beauty has never been more broad. Now it’s not all about wanting to look like the supermodels on magazine covers, but rather enhancing your own features and letting your own unique appearance shine.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Happily married with kids and changing the world!
