Jiyoung Kim: Self-Care Starts from Within
Jiyoung Kim, Former Digital Director of Vogue Korea, shares her tips on staying healthy while staying in.
Keeping up with trends while staying true to her minimalist-chic style may seem too tiring a job for the average woman, but for Jiyoung Kim (@jiyoungkim6364), that’s what she does effortlessly.
BEAUBIT gets the former Digital Director of Vogue Korea, who is also a freelance brand consultant, stylist and creative director, to share with us her self-care tips and how she stays healthy while staying at home.
What is your earliest memory of beauty and what does it mean to you?
When I was in middle school, I did my first makeup look to go out with friends. The foundation was too cakey and everything was clumsy, but I really enjoyed it! And I realised that the size of my eyes could be doubled thanks to mascara (laughs). From then on, makeup meant pleasure to me.
What is your beauty routine like, now that you have more time at home?
I’m enjoying being makeup-free. My beauty routine is quite simple: I start with a gentle gel cleanser and then let my face dry naturally (I never use towels on my face). And then I apply 3 drops of serum and layer on moisturizer and sunscreen. I’ve been doing a face mask twice a week while I’m waiting for my hair to dry.
Your current favourite beauty products?
For skincare, I’m a huge fan of Skinceuticals. Especially the C E Ferulic Vitamin C Serum (SGD248). And I like La Mer’s The Moisturizing Soft Cream (SGD510) and Eye Concentrate (SGD355). I’ve also been loving the Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Lip Care Collection.
For makeup, I’ve been using the Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF 40 PA+++ (SGD92). Chanel’s eyeliners are my all-time favourite; they don’t budge.
What is a skincare secret you’re rediscovering?
Your neck should also be part of your routine, so skincare products should be applied on your neck too!
Any self-care tips while social distancing?
I’m trying to take care of myself better, starting from the inside. I’ve been doing things like drinking plenty of water, eating healthier food, doing 10-minute stretching exercises. I’ve also been making detox juices of seasonal fruits and veggies every morning and it’s so tasty!
How has being in the media industry changed the way you consume content and products?
I’ve been working in the media industry for almost 18 years now, and I’ve had many opportunities to access the newest content and products. I use only the products that best fit my skin after a long trial, but it’s always exciting to test out new cosmetics!
What is the Korean perception of beauty?
The Korean perception of beauty is still natural as it was before. However, it is not an unpolished kind of naturalness. For example, at first glance, it looks like a makeup-free, bare face, but in fact, it’s exquisitely created using foundation and concealer. I would say sophisticated naturalness is the essence of Korean beauty.
“Sophisticated naturalness is the essence of Korean beauty.“
