Mirelle Phachareeya on the Vitamin C Tips That Changed Her Skin

We know that good skincare is more of a journey than a destination, but we can’t help but admit that we all love one-off skincare tips that help us get one step closer to clear skin. And if there’s anyone we should be taking notes about skincare from, it’s Mirelle Phachareeya Gruenert.

One can’t help but envy the German-Thai’s luminous skin—because luminous is really the only way to describe it. The digital content creator and marketing creative is currently based in New York, focusing on creating content for her Instagram but also, working on stock images for brands and international firms. She previously worked in commercial advertising, doing up ads for big names like Coca Cola, Pepsi and Pfizer.

Ahead, Mirelle opens up about her childhood growing up in the countryside, her outfit staples, her go-to skincare products, and more.

Where did you grow up and how has your experience shaped the person you are today?

I grew up in eastern Germany in a small countryside town. My parents and I travelled between Asia and Europe a fair bit as my father had business here and there.

My childhood was amazing and very adventurous. When I was home I mostly sneaked off and played with my neighbour’s farm animals (laughs). I climbed trees, went fishing, skiing, mountain biking, mushroom foraging and so many other activities. After school, I explored the forest right behind my house. In the summer, my friends and I would ride bikes and cycle 15 kilometres just to go to the lake for a dip. I loved growing up in the countryside and that definitely shaped me into the person I am today. I’m always up for adventures, I love the thrill and it helps that I’m not afraid to get dirty or hurt. I would say I’m a tad reckless and have a tendency to overdo things because I don’t know when to stop (laughs).

What keeps you busy every day?

I love cooking, I spend hours doing so! I’m always coming up with new and delicious dishes—I’m not a Michelin-starred chef for sure, but my skills are pretty decent. I also spend a lot of time taking photos, editing and planning new projects. I love working out, but many gyms and public parks are closed due to the pandemic, so a good yoga or jumping rope session and bodyweight workouts at home keep me healthy and active.

Where are you finding your inspiration these days?

Inspiration is everywhere these days; I put my headphones on, listen to some music and ideas just come to me. Or I could be scrolling through my Explore feed and stumble upon an artist that creates something so inspirational and special.

You have a talent for creating a mood that draws the reader in with your photos on your Instagram. What’s your storytelling approach?

To be honest, I don’t really plan how to but the important part for me is to make sure that it looks aesthetically pleasing, but also professional, even if it’s just for myself. Of course, I like to share with my community as well.

What’s your go-to look for the day ahead? Do you plan your outfits ahead or pick randomly?

I rarely plan outfits and it does sometimes drive me crazy! But a loose white shirt, a blazer and a pair of shorts or loose pants are usually my go-to. I’ll throw on some sneakers or sandals, sunglasses, gold jewellery and I’m done! I’m a fan of that boyish look.

What is your ultimate favourite fashion investment piece?

My Bottega Veneta Casette Chain bag!

Name 5 essential things in your handbag.

Lip balm, wallet, earphones, a camera and keys.

You’ll always find lip balm in my bag. Keeping your lips hydrated and fresh is definitely a priority—nothing is worse than chapped lips! I’m also a music person, especially my oldies, which keeps me energised, happy and boredom-free while on the go.

If I can make it fit, then it’s my camera. Capturing pictures isn’t about planning the perfect setting… sometimes you walk past something and it’s just worth capturing.

And lastly, keys because you can’t get back into your apartment if you don’t have them with you (laughs).

Let’s talk about your beauty routine. What does it look like?

I drink a glass of lemon juice mixed with manuka honey every single morning! It makes my skin glow and it just gives your immune system a healthy shot of vitamin C. Also I never forget to apply sunscreen—it’s just so important to protect your skin from sun damage!

I stick with what works and don’t change my routine very often. It currently consists of several products from Dr. Dennis Gross and The Ordinary. Every few days I’ll use the face peel by Dr. Dennis Gross to exfoliate. The Ordinary’s retinoid emulsion and vitamin C powder also work wonders for me; they keep my skin moisturised, glowing and dewy.

How did you develop the routine that works for your skin?

It took ages! I pretty much lived in a dry and cold country all my life and a thick moisturiser and sunscreen were enough to keep my skin in good condition. But when I moved to Bangkok previously, it changed everything! Pollution and humidity made my skin super oily and gave me breakouts

When do you feel most confident in your beauty?

It’s absurd to say that you always feel beautiful because I don’t. But I do feel most beautiful when I am happy and know that I did something good that day. I don’t think beauty comes from the outside.

“Beauty is happiness, happiness is beauty.”

What are your plans for the future? What would you like to have accomplished in the next five years?

I’m not one to plan step-by-step how my future is going to look like. After all, one never knows what will happen tomorrow. All I would hope for is to be successful in what I do, love what I do and live a long and happy life.
